USA Today: 2014 start for new league

Postby admin » Thu Jan 03, 2013 6:56 pm

Although no major expansion plans are expected to be announced, the group is expected to announce that it has reached an agreement with the remaining Big East schools to leave the league a year earlier than originally stated, with a start-up date of July 1, 2014, rather than July 1, 2015.

Good news although I know a lot of us Xers were hoping for 2013. Getting greedy I know. :D

Still no clarification on 10 or 12 teams though.

Now that Boise's bailed, with SD State sure to follow, it's not at all out of the question that none of these C-USA schools which are supposed to be joining the Big East actually come. If that's the case there's only 6 football schools left and that's not enough for a league. At that point I'm sure Rutgers and Louisville try to sneak out the back door to their new homes a year early. The other 4 are up the proverbial creek. Do the Holy 7 stick with those 4 for a year or do we start our new league in the fall? Certainly not out of the question this could happen. Hopefully the powers-that-be are ready.

I think 2014 is the most likely bet.

2014 is definitely most likely but we'd better be ready for all eventualities. If the Big East falls apart and we're not ready to go...

Yeah, if SDSU leaves and MWC somehow prys Houston and SMU away, all bets are off....

It looks like the League will start in 2014

From the release, it is disclosed that an entertainment firm and law firm were retained to facilitate the transition into a new league. Seems like a sound move to do this now.
Of interest, the release indicates the that the entertainment consultant will be involved in the decisions on future members. Fine! But it appears that the decision on future members to be invited might rely heavily upon the T-V market projections. Makes sense, but the bottom line may be strictly commercial. Sic est fatum!
