FS1 Lands No. 2 Spot For Total-Day Audience In 2020
Buoyed by its studio shows, college football games and NASCAR races, FS1 finished 2020 as the second most-watched cable sports network on a total-day basis, marking the first time the channel has drawn more viewers than ESPN2, NBCSN and NFL Network in a calendar year.

The race is really for second place, as ESPN has been the top sports network for the past several decades and remained in that position for both total day and primetime in 2020, according to Nielsen numbers. In total day, NFL Network placed third, NBCSN was fourth and ESPN2 was fifth. The 2020 primetime chart has ESPN first, of course, followed in order by NFL Network, NBCSN, FS1 and ESPN2.

In 2018, the Olympics fueled NBCSN to the second spot below ESPN, marking the first time in 25 years that a network other than ESPN2 had that No. 2 spot. Last year, ESPN2 reclaimed that No. 2 spot.

Last year was a rough one for cable sports networks, especially given the spring, when top U.S. sports postponed their seasons because of the pandemic. “It was a tough year for national cable; everybody’s down,” said Fox Sports’ Mike Mulvihill. “Still, that’s a significant milestone for us to finally be No. 2 in national cable sports for an entire year in the seventh full calendar year of FS1.”

Mulvihill pointed to FS1’s studio programming, which accounted for 35% of its schedule and 30% of overall viewing. “If you go back five years, only 4% of FS1 viewing was coming from daily studio programming,” Mulvihill said. “During that period where sports were largely on hiatus, we became even more reliant on daily studio programming than we would have been in a normal year.”

Mulvihill also credited college football, which posted a viewership gain on FS1 in 2020, and NASCAR for FS1’s performance. “After that pandemic hiatus, the races that we had in late May and June -- a lot of which were on cable -- performed basically in line with what they would do in a normal year. The contributions we got from the college football relationships and NASCAR relationship probably pushed us over the top.”

My guess for the A10 (if they renewal with NBC at all) is Peacock - similar to how the AAC is mostly on ESPN+, I think conferences other than the P5 + Big East will mostly be making their way over to streaming platforms. Like you said, the A10 is already on ESPN+ too, so they could just consolidate there. Even the large majority of NBC's soccer content is on Peacock - just a few games a week actually make it to NBC or NBCSN.

As for the NHL, I think NBC may be prepared to lose them. This season is the last of their contract and with no sign of an extension, I think we could end up seeing the NHL go back to ESPN - or maybe Fox will throw its hat in the ring.
