The money issue is a bit of a red herring. An extra couple million on a budget of $1.5 billion doesn’t really mean much at the end of the day for a school like GU.
As far as Ed’s bonafides, we needed to stanch the bleeding. He’s an extremely high floor kind of candidate and will likely have us at .500 in conference within a couple years. GU couldn’t afford taking a shot on an English or even a Shrewsbury type candidate from a brand perspective. The alumni are in all out revolt against Jack D and this was by far the best pick to placate both of the camps that have been in pretty bitter opposition for several years, the townies who worship at the altar of JT and the alums who are tired of the Thompson familigia bs.
And there are those of us who feel like the GU ceiling is far, far higher than that of a PC. Market, recruiting grounds, academics (that does matter to certain recruits and parents), campus, facilities. I’d challenge any BE fan to name a better bar than the Tombs or better sammy than the chicken madness a block off campus.

In 2 years Shrewsbury already has 1 NCAA Tournament win (.5 per year) compared to Cooley's 3 in 17 years (.17 per year). If Georgetown actually had a shot with Shrewsbury and didn't hire him for whatever reason, that's insane. Not only that, but they'd be poaching from a Big Ten school rather than a Big East (along with their recruits/players).

I'd hope that Shrewsbury was never walking through that door, along with all other decent candidates. Only thing that'd make this make sense.

The program was in decent position, two years removed from a protected seed, and Georgetown could afford to swing for the fences on a guy who looks really promising. The risk is that Shrewsbury is just catching lightning in a bottle right now, and he falls flat at Georgetown when the program has already gone through five years of Patrick Ewing. Back-to-back coaching failures would be really bad for Georgetown, especially when the coach prior to that also for fired after dropping off at the end of his tenure. It's already been eight years since they were last in the tournament. A failed hire here would extend that to eleven or twelves years.
Cooley, meanwhile, is as close to a sure thing that you can get at this level. He has shown over three full recruiting cycles that he can produce decent to good teams in a major conference that often make the tournament and he did it at a like-minded institution to Georgetown but with fewer resources. A lower ceiling but a much higher floor.

And Cooley has shown that he can work the transfer portal to great success. Something big in turning around Georgetown quickly.
