I've thought all along that when he took over, it was a power play to get involved deeper on the east coast. Butler's foundation, academic success, history and location in a large city allows it to develop deeper ties to the NY-Phila-DC megatropolis. It's no secret that Butler wanted more presence in that region. Getting a Big East guy was one step in that direction, this move would solidify Butler's name on the east coast in large markets. Easy decision to be made, especially as academic standards at BU continue to rise.

Does it really make any sense to have Dayton in the Big East when they will probably have Xavier? Why have two teams from ths same market? If Cincy were to stay in the Big East(not happening, just saying) there is no way xavier gets the invite. This is the same reason why VCU or George Mason won't get invites because their respective markets is already covered by Georgetown. And for those so called package deals that xavier will only come to the Big East unless Dayton is included is completely non sense. If the B7 said no to Dayton, do you really think Xavier will then decline joining the Big East Conference. If some people believe that, then I have a bridge to sell you.

Agree with Big Ant's thinking. Very logical. Who do you have in Big Ant?

George Mason is very close to Georgetown, but VCU is in Richmond, which is over 100 miles away from Washington DC.

On the record, I'm a die hard G'town fan and long time fan of the Big East Conference. There are some areas in Virginia that Georgetown does cover, which also includes Maryland and of course DC. I had reported in another thread that there was talk about including Memphis with the new Big East. Yes, Memphis has football, but there some talk that their football squad is not a major threat to join any of the major conferences. Once BCS football starts their playoff system, it will be geared towards the Big four conferences in football which are the Big-10, BIG 12, SEC, and Pac-10. Notice there is no ACC on this list. This is why many people are predicting that once Maryland's exit fee is settle in court, the ACC will be second coming of the BIG EAST to get hit hard.

Any way, there is no way Memphis is going to land in any of the four conferences and this may include the ACC. Their football program to put it mildly is horrible! They make Temple's football program look like a BCS contender. Now, will this happen, nobody knows for sure. There was also some talk about perhaps UConn might consider joining the New Big East, which I think there is a better chance of that happening perhaps then Memphis. Yes, UConn has football and is trying hard to leave the Big East Conference and join the ACC.

One big problem for UCONN, the ACC don't want them. UConn right now has a negative image (Currently on Probation) and other stuff that the ACC wants no part of. Second, UCONN football is horrible which belongs in a FCS league not BCS. Third, Boston College will make sure to block UCONN any way they can. There is a bad history between the two schools and they compete in the same Market. This is another reason why Villanova is totally against Temple joining the New Big East Conference for basketball. At some point or another, UCONN is going to wake up and realize they are not wanted by any of the top football conferences and stop trying to be something that they are just not. However, UCONN is a long time member of the Big East and they have a very successful relationship in basketball for both men and women, which is why if they wanted in, the BIG 7 will take them back. Once again, only time will tell.

Now, with all that being said, the two teams that are most likely to be joining the Big East will be Xavier and Butler. As for the third teams goes, I have no clue any more. Even my AAU connections who have ties to Big East schools don't even know themselves. However, there are some rumors about FOX or ESPN may want to see a coast to cost conference. If that happens, I can see Gonzaga, BYU, UNLV, LMU and St. Mary's as possible members for basketball only.

In the end, The Big East conference needs to get it right and pick schools that will help keep them on the Map and compete against the other top basketball conferences on a national level. So, I won’t be surprise if the Big East starts off with ten teams and decides to wait awhile before adding more teams. They will have more time to evaluate and see what schools are available after the next conference shift happens that will help make the conference much stronger.

I don't think our C-7 league will include UConn nor Memphis-- very very low probability anyway.
A lot is pointing to 12 teams by adding Xavier, Butler, Dayton, Creighton and Saint Louis, and I would say that scenario has the inside track-- anything different than that is a long shot.

I hope they just go to 12 teams. Part of me thinks that whatever network gets the C7 will want 12 teams for more league games and more content and markets. The other part of me thinks the C7 will want only 10 teams which means more money for each individual school.

Just thinking about this a little, but is there TV merit in leveraging Pacific Time Zone games to increase total TV ratings for the conference if they were to go relatively bigger with a national/private conference with significant Mountain and Pacific time zone membership? It seems like there's some kind of balance to be struck between total number of teams vs. the realistic amount of airtime you can get for TV.

To try to put it another way, if you give yourself two more useful hours a night for coverage can you increase the number of TV games enough to go to 16 or 18 or 20 teams and still end up with more revenue per team?

I think we'd be very wise to consider adding Gonzaga and St. Mary's. I have no idea how the rest of the sports would work, but for basketball it would be great.
